Nelson Mandela was a South African activist and politician. He campaigned against apartheid by any means necessary and spent 27 years behind bars as a political prisoner. After his release in 1990, he won the first democratic elections in his country with an absolute majority and became South Africa's first black president. His traditional clan name is "Madiba".
