What would Jesus preach in the 21st century? Who would his disciples be? And how would the powerful of our time in politics, society and church react to the provocations of an influential prophet and social revolutionary? Exceptional director Milo Rau (THE CONGO TRIBUNAL) and his team went to the southern Italian city of Matera for the filming of THE NEW GOSPEL, in film history both Pasolini and Gibson's legendary films about the life of Jesus. At the origins of the Gospel, they timelessly stage the story as the passion play of an entire civilization. Together with Cameroonian political activist Yvan Sagnet, Rau creates a biblical story that could not be more timely. From the film, they initiated the political campaign "The Revolt of Dignity," which fights for the rights of migrants who have come to Europe via the Mediterranean to now be enslaved in the tomato fields of southern Italy and live in segregated ghettos under inhumane conditions. This is how a new gospel for the 21st century emerges from action art, politics, film and theater. A manifesto of solidarity with the poorest, a revolution for a more humane world.
