Ruth Beckermann's journey through her own family history tells both the story of Central European Jews and the history of a region. The journey begins in Vienna, where her grandmother had gone underground in order to survive the holocaust. Beckermann's mother returned to Vienna from Israel and gave birth to Ruth. The director leaves Vienna to explore the landscapes of Eastern Europe. They bear witness to the persecution and extermination of the Jews.
