Windstill

Society/Drama, Germany 2021

Midsummer and crippling heat in Berlin: Lara (Giulia Goldammer) looks after her one-year-old daughter. Meanwhile, her boyfriend Jacob (Thomas Schubert) toils away as a cook. Everyday life is exhausting, and a haze of frustration hangs over the couple. Recognition, whether in the relationship or at work, is lacking. One day, Lara leaves the baby with Jacob without a word and breaks out of her routine. She flees to her home in South Tyrol, where her estranged sister Ida (Barbara Krzoska) works with a temporary help to maintain their deceased parents' farm. But Lara's unexpected appearance opens up old wounds and disturbs the fragile peace. Can the sisters find each other again and rewrite their lives? In her feature film debut “Windstill”, Nancy Camaldo (HFF Munich) has established two millennials who get caught up in each other and yet are constantly trying to get away from each other and move on. The result is an impressive sister drama set against the picturesque backdrop of South Tyrol - and a portrait of indecisive young people who should actually be looking for change in order to find happiness, but instead remain stuck in unloved routines for too long. “As a psychogram of two sisters traumatized by the loss of their parents, the leadenly realistic narrative of everyday life gains intensity and depth from the back to the front. The supposed social and relationship drama about the hardships and pressures of young parents caught between children, work and a broken relationship expands into an intense chamber play about loss and forgiveness.” (Gunda Bartels, on: tagesspiegel.de)
