Dreamy movie projectionist Francis lives in his own little world in the middle of a papier-mâché metropolis. One evening, while driving home, he dreams of the movie diva Vivien and is involved in a fatal car accident. Francis rams the car of the notorious gangster boss Mascarpone. He takes Francis' beloved dog Farfalle hostage in order to force his desperate master into complicity in a bank robbery.
But the coup goes wrong. The bank robbers are arrested and Francis flees with the loot. Pursued by half the town, he makes his way to Vivien to confess his love for her - which the beauty surprisingly reciprocates. But the pursuers and the next drama are literally knocking at the door...
“The world that Jonas Riemer creates in his 14-minute short film MASCARPONE is lovingly nostalgic and refreshingly new at the same time. The congenial interplay of live-action film and handmade animation creates a cinematic illusion that has nothing to hide from the great role models of classic Hollywood crime films.
Riemer and his team know all the standards, the images, the motifs and look at them with a winking and loving eye. The handmade cardboard animations are brilliantly integrated into the scenery, the rhythm of the montage and music is fast-paced and the actors embody their roles perfectly. MASCARPONE thus becomes an enchanting homage to the genre. Lovingly conceived, superbly realized.” (FBW rating: “Particularly valuable”)
