Based on the novella by Stefan Zweig: When the Germans occupy Austria in 1938, the Viennese lawyer Dr. Werner von Basil is arrested. The Gestapo, who want him to reveal the hiding place of valuable art treasures, put him in solitary confinement and thus almost drive him insane. During an interrogation, he manages to steal a chess textbook. To save himself from his intellectual isolation, he occupies himself with chess like a man possessed, and it is precisely for this reason that he almost goes mad. Once he is free again, he encounters the world chess champion on an ocean liner and allows himself to be tempted into a game with him. When he loses, he is in danger of finally losing his mind. He can only save himself by never playing chess again.
