On the wrong track with crooked deals: The relatively unsuccessful but sly New York lawyer Harry Fabian (Robert De Niro) wants to make it big in the boxing business as a promoter. To do so, he plans to organize a big tournament with the old ex-boxer Al as his advisor. But to get into the ring with the big names in the business, you need money - and Harry doesn't have any. Undeterred, he sticks to his big dream, not realizing that he is making more and more powerful enemies in New York's underworld with his scams and empty promises to his backers. Jessica Lange, Eli Wallach and Jack Warden also shine in other roles. "Night and the City" is a remake of Jules Dassin's famous 1950 film noir thriller "The Rat of Soho" - this time with Robert De Niro in the leading role. Much is reminiscent of the petty criminal milieu from Martin Scorsese's "Mean Streets" (also starring De Niro), whereby the petty criminal milieu of New York's streets is skillfully captured. A film that is entirely tailored to its star Robert De Niro, who teams up with director Irwin Winkler for the second time after "Guilty on Suspicion".
