René

Biography, Czechia 2008

A pure documentary with unadulterated authenticity, it tells the scarcely believable story of René, who since the age of 17 has been accompanied by a film camera on his journey between prisons and brief periods of freedom. The period of his transformation from a young man to a man was recorded by director Helena Třeštíková against the background of significant political changes in Central Europe. René's story begins in prison under socialist posters, continues during the Velvet Revolution, and reaches its apparent conclusion with the amnesty granted by then-President Václav Havel. However, René soon returns to prison as a prisoner in the European Union. During his years behind bars, mainly for theft, he gets tattoos all over his body, breaks out of prison and is caught again, publishes two novels, robs the apartment of director Třeštíková, has two love affairs, falls ill with multiple sclerosis and is classified by psychologists as having above-average intelligence. René demonstrates his worldview through the vaguely written tattoo "Fuck of people" that "adorns" his neck.
