The Living Witnesses

Politics/Society, Luxembourg 2021

The Living Witnesses is a thought-provoking film that intricately connects the past with the present. It delves into the themes of antisemitism, racism, and the haunting legacy of the Holocaust from World War II, drawing eerie parallels to the resurgence of racism in modern-day Europe. The film brings together three survivors from the Second World War, individuals who endured the horrors of deportation and concentration camps, and juxtaposes their experiences with three students hailing from Luxembourg. These students, either born in Luxembourg or immigrants from Syria or the Ivory Coast, represent the diverse tapestry of contemporary society. In the backdrop of the Holocaust's indelible stain on history, these six individuals embark on a journey of self-discovery and enlightenment. They explore how the sins of humanity, manifest in crimes against the Jewish community during World War II, continue to cast a long shadow over the collective consciousness of present-day societies. It becomes painfully evident that we are still grappling with the aftermath of the post-war era, and the once-vibrant promises of "never again" appear to be fading into obscurity.
