Sunny Side up

Comedy, Germany 1999

Out in the country, where only the chickens know stress, the peak of excitement is the annual "Stud Auction", where the region's most eligible bachelor farmers are auctioned off for a tête-à-tête with the highest female bidders. The studs in question can be poor and sexy, like eco-farmer Toon, or rich and flabby, like Fredo, the local chicken king. Master of ceremonies is businessman Heini, who's slicker than a fresh pat of cow dung and whose business practices smell accordingly. Our cowboys find their match in the three pals Floris, Fanny and Rita. But before they can all ride off into the sunset, Toon robs a bank and a supermarket, triggering an avalanche of increasingly outrageous situations involving bribery, car chases, shotgun attacks and, most frightening of all, a hair transplant. With dry wit and deadpan humor, this turbulent comedy casts a loving and gently mocking look at life in the country and boasts a cast featuring some of the top names in German entertainment today: Moritz Bleibtreu (Run, Lola, Run), Meret Becker (Comedian Harmonists), Armin Rohde (Kleine Haie), Heike Makatsch (Männerpension), Dietmar Bär and Catrin Striebeck.
