The Decent One

War/History, Israel/Austria 2014

In February 2014, private letters from Heinrich Himmler, the "Architect of the Final Solution", which had been in private Jewish possession for decades, were published. Suddenly, a bundle of private documents was available that no other member of the Nazi leadership had in comparable quantity. "One must always be decent and brave and kind in life," Himmler writes in his daughter's poetry album. How can a person be a hero according to his own principles and a mass murderer according to the principles of the world? The Israeli director Vanessa Lapa has - on the basis of the Himmler legacy and other archive material (151 sources from 53 archives in 13 different countries) - made a documentary film about a person who is professionally and was at peace with himself in private.
