My Automic Aunt tells the insightful and surprisingly funny story of a family adjusting to life after the Fukushima nuclear disaster. Director Kyoko Miyake revisits her Aunt Kuniko, who was forced to abandon her businesses and home following the catastrophe. Living aimlessly in temporary accommodation on the edge of the contaminated zone, Aunt Kuniko is determined to return home. Miyake is puzzled as to why Aunt Kuniko and her family do not seem to be angry even though their lives have unravelled completely. As the first year after the disaster unfolds, she finds out about a past that prevents things from being so clear cut. Aunt Kuniko proves to be warm and indefatigable. In spite of her advanced age, Kuniko tries ´to adapt to the difficult circumstances. MY ATOMIC AUNT follows Kuniko's journey. It is a deeply personal film that explores notions of home, nuclear power and family love.
