Our Children

Everyday life/History, GDR 1989

Not available in your country
The film shows young people who belong to the so-called fringe group in the German Democratic Republic (GDR). These adolescents are skinheads, punks, goths or neo-Nazis, and are featured in this documentary for the first time. It becomes clear that the young are looking for their own ways and new ideals. Often it is children who have been left alone with their problems. Violence has become the simplest way for them to resolve conflicts. The film asks for the causes, but offers no solutions. Two writers, Stefan Heym and Christa Wolf express themselves in the film on the subject. Among other things, Christa Wolf has a conversation with two of the extreme right-wing youths. Stefan Heym draws a comparison to the crisis situation in the early 30s.
