At the request of his mother Gitte, Marko (Lars Eidinger), who has lived in Berlin for years, goes to visit his parents (Corinna Harfouch, Ernst Stötzner) in the country. His hopes for a quiet weekend with his family are not fulfilled. Unexpectedly for everyone, Gitte reveals that she is well again after a long mental illness. Marko is the only one to comply with her request to treat her as a fully-fledged member of the family from now on, thus upsetting not only his parents' supposedly well-established relationship. With an ensemble of top-class actors, director Hans-Christian Schmid tells in WAS BLEIBT how a family breaks apart and finds its way to each other anew within a few days. After the award-winning films Requiem (2006) and Sturm (2009), this is his third collaboration with screenwriter Bernd Lange.
WAS BLEIBT celebrated its premiere in the competition programme of the 62nd Berlin International Film Festival.
