A tunnel is to be built to connect Denmark and Germany; the present sets off toward the future, change is in the air. The ethnologist Dara documents the houses destined for demolition. The young Pole Lucek and his colleagues prepare the coming construction site. Käthe works on the ferry, constantly bringing people back and forth with their stories and goods. Birte and Leif leave their house, inherited over generations. Agnes' life is reflected in her diary entries, her collectibles and the walls of her house, soon to be demolished. A Danish summer: long days turn to blue nights. People meet, then part ways again.
