Lionel has raised his daughter alone. For years she was the centre of his existence, now she is growing up and he is getting used to the idea of letting her go. He is aware that Joséphine will lead her own life, but he fears the change. The separation from her father is not easy for the young woman either. She wonders if she will ever meet a person again who loves her as much as her father does. 35 RUM nourishes the longing for a calming pole in private relationships, that makes one strong for the world and radiates out to the surroundings. 35 RUM enchants through its closeness to the characters and the participation in their relationships that Claire Denis grants the viewer in an admirable, poetic way.
