Jonathan has been caring for his seriously ill father Burghardt for years and manages the family farm together with his aunt Martha. Caring for his father, organizing the farm and the hard work in the fields determine his everyday life. The relationship between Martha and Burghardt is strained; for years they have not exchanged a word with each other. The fact that Burghardt cannot allow any closeness and always leaves Jonathan's questions about his mother's early death unanswered does not make the situation any easier. Jonathan senses that something is standing between them, but cannot penetrate the wall to his father. As Burghardt's condition visibly deteriorates, Martha hires the nurse Anka, who enchants Jonathan with her openness. He is fascinated by the ease with which Anka approaches life's essential questions and falls head over heels in love. When Burghardt's childhood friend Ron, who was thought to have disappeared, turns up, Jonathan's father really blossoms. For Jonathan, however, Ron is an intruder. His dislike intensifies as he gradually learns more about a past he had no idea existed. A long-hidden family secret puts the father-son relationship to the test. Slowly, Jonathan understands that he must find his own way - and that loving also means being able to let go.
