Drama, Germany 1999

"Bloodbath on the open street" is the headline of a daily newspaper and reports "one of the most serious crimes in the history of the city". The tabloids know: "The butcher wanted to murder." The Minister of the Interior interrupts his vacation and wants to reconsider the use of firearms by police officers, and calls for tightening asylum legislation are heard everywhere. The people's emotions are boiling. Stuttgart's mayor, Manfred Rommel, decides to give a longer speech than originally planned during the funeral service for the murdered police officers. As head of the city, Rommel said he had to have a moderating effect, be there for all citizens, for locals as well as foreigners, for light-skinned as well as dark-skinned people. Rommel's statement "It could also have been a white man, it could also have been a Swabian," who committed the insane act, provoked the most violent reactions among the population.
