’24H Europe – We are the future’ is a 24-hour expedition into the European continent and to the people who are its future. The program follows 60 protagonists from 25 nations, between the age of 15 and 30. They lead us into their world, share their everyday lives, their dreams and realities. University graduates turn into business consultants, while Banlieue dwellers lag behind. Locals, migrants, strangers, lost souls. Saving lives at sea, fighting for their homeland. Volunteers in hospitals, searchers in the provinces, hipsters assessing their global possibilities. 6 a.m. Loviisa (17) from Helsinki starts the day with wildwater swimming. She will soon graduate from high school. This June 15, 2018, Loviisa is looking forward to Midsummer Night, an important traditional festival in Scandinavia as well as in the Baltics. Steelworker Andrei Brisinov lives with his wife and young son in Magnitogorsk, Russia, in the southern Urals. This is where the border between Europe and Asia runs. The Sea Watch 3 cruises in the Mediterranean. Chloe (25), a German born in Rome, is on the lookout for refugees. Mary Khan (23) lives in the German bundesland of Hessia and is a member of the "Alternative for Germany" party. Daughter of immigrants herself, she wants to prevent more refugees from coming to Germany. For most young Europeans in 2018, war and destruction is a distant rumble at most. The vast majority of them hardly notice that a war is smoldering in eastern Ukraine. What many of them do experience is a continent marked by contradictions. Climate change, environmental destruction, social tensions. Old truths are no longer valid - but tomorrow is not quite here yet.
