Karl Valentin

Comedian, word acrobat, philosopher and avant-gardist

Karl Valentin (1882-1948) was a comedian, playwright, word acrobat, actor, filmmaker, craftsman, collector, philosopher, folk singer and avant-gardist. To this day, no other artist represents Munich as aptly as he did, and Valentin himself believed he could not live without Munich. On their rare guest appearances in Vienna, Zurich and especially Berlin, Karl Valentin and Liesl Karlstadt were celebrated as avant-gardists of their time. His and their joint works have been translated into numerous languages and performed worldwide. Contemporaries such as Bertolt Brecht, Kurt Tucholsky and Lion Feuchtwanger were early to pay tribute to Karl Valentin's art, and his influence continues to this day.
