Filmuniversität Babelsberg: Famous Alumni

To mark the university's anniversary: films by former graduates

At the Film University Babelsberg KONRAD WOLF in Babelsberg, more than 2000 directors, producers, dramaturges, actors, film scholars, cameramen, writers, sound editors and editors were trained for the GDR media, but also for film and television media in numerous other countries (e.g. Vietnam, Chile, many Arab and African countries, Israel and Bulgaria) until German reunification. Situated in the villa district of Babelsberg close to the border and with political events always in view, the training centre succeeded astonishingly well in these years in regulating the difficult individual relationship between (permitted) artistic freedom and political conformity demanded by the state in favour of personal creativity. Even if this unfortunately could not rule out the exmatriculation of artistic and political pioneers, as the prominent examples of Thomas Brasch and Thomas Heise show. Even after reunification, many Film University graduates successfully embarked on careers in the film industry. Their artistic biographies, lives and careers bear witness not least to the Film University Babelsberg's successful contemporary activities. Alumni from the ‘Directing’ department, each of whom is represented in this collection with a work or their own film collection: Daniel Abma, Alice Agneskirchner, Stepan Altrichter, Thomas Brasch, Andreas Dresen, Carsten Fiebeler, Thomas Heise, André Hörmann, Winfried Junge, Rolf Losansky, Volker Koepp, Hovhannes Martirosyan, Michael Fetter Nathansky, Simon Ostermann, Axel Ranisch, Bernd Sahling, Hannes Schönemann, Isabell Šuba, Andreas Voigt.
