Steven Soderbergh condenses the personality of the legendary revolutionary with contrasting stylistic devices
Ernesto "Che" Guevara (1928-1967) was the leader of the rebel army of the Cuban revolution. Steven Soderbergh approaches what is probably the greatest symbol of revolution ever in documentary and reportage style: as "guerilla filmmaking" with a hand-held camera. The two parts of his diptych differ in terms of narrative tempo, color scheme, image format and chronology and are deliberately conceived as opposites. While "Che - Revolución" focuses on Guevara's rise from doctor to commander and hero of the revolution, "Che - Guerilla" describes the attempt to bring the Cuban revolution to Bolivia. Benicio del Toro was honored at the Cannes Film Festival for his portrayal of Che.
