Heidelberg City Library is a media centre, learning centre and meeting place in a central location in Heidelberg. With 230,000 media items and a wide range of services, it offers an inspiring environment for people of all ages and nationalities. Users of the City Library accounted for 1.2 million loans in 2024, with printed books still achieving very good loan figures, contrary to the general trend. It is the most popular public institution in the university town and is open 46 hours a week. A large number of reading and work spaces ensure a high quality of stay without any obligation to consume, attracting over 400,000 visitors per year. As a house of literature and culture, it offers a diverse programme of events for children and adults throughout the year. Very popular are the in-house BibLab with media education offerings on the topic of digitality, both mobile and on-site, and the seed library, where seed-fast seeds can be borrowed, grown and, after harvesting, part of the newly obtained seeds can be returned.
